Claude Haiku 5.5: What Cheaper Small AI Models Mean for Business Automation

Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5 cuts the cost of high-volume AI tasks like message triage and data extraction. Here is what it means for clinics, agencies and online stores.

On October 7, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, the newest and smallest model in its Claude lineup. Anthropic describes it as its cheapest, fastest and most capable small model so far. It is built for high-volume, cost-sensitive work such as classification, data extraction, routing, summaries and live customer support. It is available through the Claude API and on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry, under the model ID claude-haiku-5-5.

The headline for business owners is price. For prompts up to 100,000 tokens, Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. The previous small model, Claude Haiku 4.5, was listed at $1 and $5. Prompts longer than 100,000 tokens cost more: $0.50 for input and $2.50 for output per million tokens. Anthropic says that, on average, Haiku 5.5 costs around 75 percent less to run than Haiku 4.5.

There are a few other practical details. The model can read up to one million tokens of context and write up to 128,000 tokens in a single reply. It is the first Haiku-class model with an adjustable effort setting, which lets developers decide how much the model should think before answering. Batch requests, where results do not need to come back instantly, get a 50 percent discount. Repeated instructions that are cached cost just $0.01 per million tokens for shorter prompts.

Why does this matter if you run a clinic, a property agency or an online store rather than a tech company? Most useful business automation is not one big, clever task. It is thousands of small, repetitive ones. Reading an incoming WhatsApp message and deciding if it is a booking, a complaint or a sales lead. Pulling the name, phone number and budget out of an enquiry form. Summarising a call so your team can follow up. Each of these is simple, but the volume adds up, and so does the AI bill if every step runs on a large, expensive model.

A small, fast model changes that maths. Here is a simple illustration using the published prices. Say each customer message is about 300 tokens in and 50 tokens out. Ten thousand messages would use about 3 million input tokens and 500,000 output tokens. At Haiku 5.5's list price, that is roughly $0.30 for input and $0.25 for output, before any thinking tokens, taxes or platform fees. Your real numbers will differ, but the order of magnitude shows why high-volume sorting and tagging is now cheap enough for a small business to run every day.

Take a multi-specialty clinic in Delhi or Dubai. Patients send messages at all hours asking about timings, fees, reports and appointments. A small model can read each message, tag the intent and the department, and pass it to the right workflow. Routine questions get an instant answer from approved clinic information. Anything medical or sensitive is routed to a human. The expensive part of the job, judgement, stays with your staff, while the AI handles the sorting.

A real estate agency in Gurugram, London or Texas is another good fit. Leads arrive from property portals, websites and ad forms in different formats. A small model can extract the buyer's budget, preferred location, property type and timeline, then score and push each lead into the CRM within seconds. For an e-commerce brand, the same approach can tag product reviews and support tickets by issue type, so you can spot a delivery or sizing problem early instead of reading every message by hand.

There is also a smarter way to combine models. Many well-designed AI systems use a small model as the front desk and a larger model only when needed. Haiku 5.5 can triage every request, and only the tricky cases, such as a detailed property comparison or a complex refund dispute, go to a more capable model like Claude Sonnet 5.5. Anthropic itself recommends Sonnet 5.5 or Opus 5.5, rather than Haiku, for complex multi-step agent work. You pay premium prices only for premium tasks.

The limitations deserve honest attention. Small models are designed for narrow, well-defined jobs. If you ask them to handle long, open-ended conversations or complicated reasoning, quality can drop. Pricing is also less simple than the headline suggests. Haiku 5.5 uses a newer tokenizer, so the same text counts as roughly 30 percent more tokens than on Haiku 4.5, and prompts over 100,000 tokens move to the higher price tier. Thinking tokens are billed as output too. And as with any AI model, it can make mistakes, so anything involving health advice, money or legal commitments needs clear rules, human review and proper handling of customer data under laws such as India's DPDP Act or GDPR in the UK.

The most important lesson is not about one model. Prices for AI are falling quickly, and the best choice today may not be the best choice in six months. Businesses that hard-wire one model into everything will find it harder to take advantage. Businesses that build their automation so models can be swapped, tested and compared will keep saving money as the market moves.

This is where Legacy Services can help. We build AI chatbots, AI calling agents and n8n workflow automations for clinics, real estate teams, e-commerce brands and service businesses. For a high-volume use case, we typically design a layered setup: a small, low-cost model such as Haiku 5.5 handles intent detection, data extraction and routing, while a larger model is called only for the harder conversations. For example, an AI receptionist that answers calls can hand each transcript to a small model that tags the enquiry, extracts the caller's details and logs everything into your CRM or Google Sheets through n8n.

We also make sure the system is practical to own. We set clear rules for when the AI must hand over to a human, keep your data in tools you control, and build the workflow so the underlying model can be changed later without rebuilding everything. Before going live, we test the setup on real examples from your business, so you can see the accuracy and the expected monthly running cost instead of guessing.
