GPT-6.1 Terra: What OpenAI's Cheaper Computer-Use Model Means for Business
OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra brings low-cost computer use and visual reasoning. Here is what it costs, where it fits, and how clinics, agencies and stores can use it.
On October 26, 2026, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, a new model built for speed and lower cost. OpenAI describes it as fast and efficient, aimed at three jobs in particular: visual reasoning, precise computer use and clear writing. Computer use means the model can look at a screen, understand what it sees, and click, type and navigate through software much like a person would. For developers, the model is available in the API under the name gpt-6.1-terra.
The headline is the price. OpenAI's pricing page lists GPT-6.1 Terra at $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens at standard rates. Independent coverage from outlets such as gHacks and TestingCatalog reports that this is roughly half the API price of the earlier GPT-5.6 Terra. Inside ChatGPT, the model is rolling out in Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users. It is not offered in the regular ChatGPT chat experience.
OpenAI is also clear about what Terra is not for. For in-depth research or complex coding, the company still points users to its larger models, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI claims Terra matches GPT-6 Astra on many tasks at about one tenth of the price per token. That is the company's own claim, and early benchmark numbers vary between sources and test settings, so it is worth treating as a starting point rather than a guarantee.
Why does this matter to a business owner? Most practical AI work in a small or mid-size company is not cutting-edge research. It is reading forms, filling in systems, answering routine questions, sorting documents and moving data from one place to another. These are exactly the high-volume, repetitive tasks where model cost decides whether an automation is worth running at all. When the price per task drops, projects that did not make financial sense six months ago can start to add up.
To put the pricing in plain terms, here is a simple illustration. A typical customer support exchange might use around 3,000 input tokens and 500 output tokens. At Terra's standard rates, that works out to roughly half a US cent per exchange. Computer-use tasks cost more, because the model processes screenshots and takes many steps, but the same logic applies. Cheaper tokens make it realistic to run AI on thousands of small tasks every month instead of a handful of high-value ones.
The computer-use ability is the more interesting part. Many businesses run on older software that has no API, such as a clinic's practice management system, a builder's booking portal or a government website for filings. Until now, connecting these to an automation usually meant expensive custom integration or a person doing the data entry by hand. A capable, affordable computer-use model can operate these screens directly, which opens up automation for tools that were previously out of reach.
Consider a dental or physiotherapy clinic in Delhi or Dubai. Appointment requests arrive by phone, WhatsApp and the website, but the clinic's scheduling software is a desktop program with no integration options. An AI calling agent or chatbot can collect the patient's details, and a computer-use step can then enter the booking into the clinic's existing system. Staff review a daily summary instead of retyping every appointment.
A real estate agency in the UK or India offers a second example. Agents often copy the same listing details into several property portals, each with its own form. A workflow can take the listing once from a spreadsheet or CRM, write a clear description, and use computer use to fill in each portal, pausing for a human to approve before anything goes live. For an e-commerce brand in the USA, Terra's visual reasoning could check product images and supplier invoices against orders, flagging mismatches for a person to resolve.
There are real limitations to be honest about. Computer use is still slower and less predictable than a proper API integration. Screens change, pop-ups appear and logins expire, so any workflow needs error handling and a clear path back to a human. Giving an AI model control of a browser or desktop also carries security risk, so access should be limited to the specific accounts and actions it needs. Benchmark scores are not the same as performance on your own software, so testing on real tasks matters.
There are also practical and legal points. OpenAI's own guidance is that harder reasoning and coding work belongs on its larger models, so Terra is not the right choice for every job. Businesses handling patient records, financial data or personal information must think about where that data is processed and whether it meets rules such as India's DPDP Act or the UK GDPR. And pricing for any AI model can change, so it is wise to build automations that can switch models without a rebuild.
This is where Legacy Services can help. We design and build AI automations for clinics, real estate firms, e-commerce brands and agencies, and we start by mapping which tasks are worth automating and which are not. For many clients, the right setup combines an AI calling agent or chatbot that handles conversations with an n8n workflow that moves the information into the systems the business already uses. Where a system has an API, we connect to it directly. Where it does not, a computer-use model like GPT-6.1 Terra can now be a sensible, lower-cost option.
In practice, we would run a small pilot on one real process, such as appointment entry or listing updates. We set clear approval steps so a staff member confirms important actions, log every step the AI takes, and measure cost and accuracy on your own data before scaling. Because we build on n8n and keep the model choice flexible, you can switch between OpenAI, Anthropic or other providers as prices and capabilities change, and you keep full ownership of your workflows and data.
GPT-6.1 Terra is a useful sign of where AI is heading: capable models are getting cheaper, and they are learning to work with the software businesses already have.
